Chapter 10

The blare of his alarm clock came way too early in the day, and Daniel was tempted to snatch his phone from the bedside table and chuck it at the wall.

Winter was almost officially here, so the mornings were dark regardless of what time he woke most days, but the alarm tied to the site had gone off at three in the morning to tell him something had activated the motion sensors. Nothing had shown up on the video feed, though. Worried that Jannik had figured it out—he was convinced the man was involved in both instances of vandalism to his sites—he’d wrapped up in a jacket and boots, grabbed his trusty baseball bat, and run over there. To find a raccoon messing around, her eyes glittering in the glare of his flashlight.

At least it hadn’t been Snowball, because then he would have felt obligated to chase her to kingdom come, no doubt risking his own life and limb, or, at the very least, his skin to her claws, to get her back inside. Otherwise, Sophie would be worried sick when she woke up.

But that wasn’t the only reason he groaned now and hit Snooze.

He’d successfully avoided Sophie for the last few days as he’d thought over things and cooled off about the walkway thing. He’d even come to the conclusion that adding those to the project was really Tilly’s call in the end. They all understood the impact on the guest bookings, though maybe he’d let Sophie know about the potential impact on his own business. After their chat in the kitchen, before he got offended, if anyone would understand, she would.

He’d come to another realization. Distraction or not, he was interested in her. No use denying it. While he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted with Sophie yet, he just knew he didn’t want them at odds. So, in the spirit of the season, he’d decided to come up with a way to declare a truce.

He still wasn’t sure if what he had in mind would make things better or worse, because now he was second-guessing himself, and he never did that. Not ever. A waste of time, he’d always believed. You make a decision, you follow it through, case closed.

Snooze went off and he groaned again, shifting around in the bed.

Then something sharp speared into his toes, which had been sticking out of the covers trying to find a balance of body temperature. With a yelp he jerked away from the pain. Scrambling, he sat up and fumbled around to flip on the bedside lamp, having no idea what attacked him, to find Snowball sitting on the other end of his bed.

Daniel dropped his head in his hands, even as he kept a close eye on the cat. “Snowball. What was that for?”

Instead of hissing or growling at him, though, the tiny cat tipped her head to the side and gave a small meow. Almost like an apology.

That was . . . new.

“I’m going to choose to believe that you thought my toes were mice.
